Making Connections members get help with medical debt

Making Connections Network members cite medical debt as their number one source of debt.

This debt deters many of us from seeking needed medical care, which can result in missed days at work and higher medical bills in the future from unchecked health problems. Medical debt also undermines  the overall financial security of our families, reducing our ability to meet basic needs and reach our dreams.

Now there’s help. The Access Project will help us negotiate with companies to reduce our medical bills. This service is free.

 Project Warm Helps Lower Heating Bills

 
  

Nobody knows how much home heating costs will go up this year, says Frank Schwartz, of Louisville’s Project Warm. But those costs may set records.

Project Warm holds workshops to teach people how to reduce heating bills. They also train volunteers to help disabled and elderly people weatherize their homes.

To reduce the amount of money you spend on heat this winter, Mr. Schwartz suggests:

  • If you leave home for most of the day, turn the thermostat down at to 55.
  • If you leave the house for a weekend, turn  the water heater down
  • If you have central heat but spend most of your time in one room, heat that space with an electric heater and turn the thermostat down.
  • Set your thermostat back at least 10 degrees before you go to bed.
